JERTIH (Oct 25): A businessman with the title of Datuk was among eight people detained by police to assist in the investigation into a fight that went viral via live-streaming on social media on Friday.

Besut police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad said all the men, aged between 21 and 40, were arrested when they turned up to have their statements recorded at the Besut police headquarters.

He said the 36-year-old victim, who lodged a police report regarding the incident, was also detained to assist in the investigation.

"We received a report at 1.32am regarding the incident, which is believed to have occurred at about 11pm in front of a house in Jertih. Based on the report received, a man claimed he was assaulted by a group of individuals while carrying out live-streaming using his mobile phone in front of one of the suspects’ houses.

"During the incident, the victim was said to have gone to the suspect's house to clear up a misunderstanding that had arisen between them. As soon as the victim reached the front of the suspect's house, he (the victim) refused to enter the house as asked by the suspect, resulting in an argument and commotion,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

Azamuddin said several of the suspect's family members came out and a scuffle ensued, resulting in the mobile phone used by the victim to carry out live-streaming being snatched by one of the family members.

"The victim sustained injuries, including bruises on the back of the head, right and left elbows, left finger and the back of his body due to struggling and falling,” he said, adding that the victim's vehicle was also allegedly damaged.

Azamuddin said all the suspects were taken to the Kuala Terengganu Court on Saturday morning for a remand application, and the case is being investigated under Sections 147 and 427 of the Penal Code for rioting and mischief.

He also called on those with information regarding the case to contact the investigation officer, Inspt Mohamad Effie Ezral Mohd Izham at (09) 6956 222 (ext 5913).

On Friday, a video went viral, believed to have been recorded by the victim and his wife with their child, who were in the car before the incident and the commotion that occurred.
